Where fundamental science becomes industrial performance

Nature spent millions of years perfecting the surface. We spent the last decades learning to read it - and the last four years bringing those principles into industrial production. Precisely. Responsibly. At scale.

Who we are

SurFunction was founded with a clear mission: to bring decades of scientific research in laser-based surface engineering out of the laboratory and into industrial production.

At the core of everything we do is ELIPSYS® - our patented Direct Laser Interference Patterning platform. Combined with complementary surface technologies including XDLIP®, it forms a uniquely capable system for engineering functional metasurfaces at industrial scale - precise, reproducible and production-ready.

What makes SurFunction different is not just the technology. It is the depth of expertise behind it. Our team unites materials scientists, laser physicists, engineers, chemists, software developers and business builders - all working toward one goal: surfaces that perform exactly as designed.

We are a young company. But the science we build on is not.

Driven by Technology - Guided by Purpose

Great technology needs great people. At SurFunction, we have both.

Dr. Dominik Britz and Ralf Zastrau represent SurFunction as Co-Founders and Managing Directors - supported by a multidisciplinary team of materials scientists, laser physicists, engineers, chemists and business professionals who bring the ELIPSYS® platform to life.

Dr. Dominik Britz

CEO

Co-founder

Material Master

Dr. Dominik Britz is a materials scientist, DLIP pioneer and the founding mind behind SurFunction's technology platform. With a doctorate in materials science and years as Deputy Director of the Steinbeis Research Center MECS, he led the transfer of DLIP from fundamental research into industrial application - working alongside the technology's original inventors, Prof. Dr. Frank Mücklich and Prof. Dr. Andrés Lasagni. He architected ELIPSYS® and continues to drive its technical evolution as CEO and Co-Founder. He didn't just witness that transition. He drove it.

DeepTech

Building a deep-tech company requires more than great science. It requires someone who knows how markets work, how deals close and how companies scale. Ralf Zastrau as a serial DeepTech founder brings exactly that - e.g. years of experience in surface technology, exit and IPO experience in nano technology, and the drive to turn SurFunction into a category-defining platform.

Dr. Daniel Müller

CTO

ELIPSYS® Architekt

Doctorate in laser physics from Saarland University - summa cum laude. His DLIP-structured surfaces didn't just pass peer review. They passed the launch pad: deployed and validated aboard the International Space Station (ISS). As CTO, Daniel drives the technological evolution of ELIPSYS® and translates cutting-edge DLIP science into industrial reality - from medical devices to microelectronics to aerospace. "Research has shown what DLIP can do - all the way to space. Now we bring that strength to market."

Alexander Hornung

CSO

Commercial Architect

Dipl.-Wirtsch.-Ing. in electrical energy technology and production management - a rare combination of engineering depth and commercial instinct that deep tech companies need to scale. Over fifteen years in industrial sales, innovation management, and strategic business development. As CSO, Alexander leads global sales and market expansion - building the commercial architecture to match a technology already proven in serial production. "Functional metasurfaces are a technological turning point. Together with our partners, we will redefine surface technologies."

The best advisory boards don't just advise. They engage.

Advisory Board

SurFunction's advisory board combines the scientific depth of DLIP's original inventors, the industrial credibility of proven manufacturing leaders, and the market intelligence of experienced venture investors. Together, they actively support the management team - on strategy, partnerships, key decisions and the long road from deep-tech innovation to category leadership.

Prof. Dr. Frank Mücklich

Chairman of the Board

Co-Founder

Prof. Dr. Frank Mücklich is the inventor of Direct Laser Interference Patterning and one of Europe's most distinguished materials scientists. Professor of Functional Materials at Saarland University and Founding Director of the Material Engineering Center Saarland (MECS), he has spent decades at the forefront of laser-based surface engineering - recognised e.g. with the Berthold Leibinger Award for Laser Innovation and the Henry Clifton Sorby Award from the American Society for Materials. He co-founded SurFunction to complete what his research made possible.

Prof. Dr. Frank Mücklich

Dr. Andreas Leffer

Board Member

Investor

Dr.-Ing. Andreas Leffer is Managing Director and owner of Stahl- und Apparatebau Hans Leffer GmbH & Co. KG - a family-owned precision engineering company founded in 1946, employing around 600 people and operating globally across pressure vessels, industrial machinery and deep foundation technology. With an engineering doctorate and decades of experience leading a complex international manufacturing business, Dr. Leffer brings what no academic or investor can: the unfiltered perspective of someone who has to make advanced technology work reliably, at scale, every day.

Niklas Raberg

Board Member

Investor

Niklas Raberg is Partner at Capnamic - one of Europe's leading early-stage venture capital firms, with a track record spanning more than 80 investments including successful trade sales and IPOs. Prior to Capnamic, Niklas worked as Investment Manager at High-Tech Gründerfonds and started his career at Accenture. He led Capnamic's investment in SurFunction - bringing institutional venture expertise, a broad technology network and a clear conviction in the platform's category-defining potential.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andrés Lasagni

Board (Observer),

Co-Founder

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andrés Fabián Lasagni is co-inventor of Direct Laser Interference Patterning and one of Europe's foremost experts in laser-based surface manufacturing. Professor of Laser-Based Manufacturing at TU Dresden - a University of Excellence - and Head of the Centre for Advanced Micro-Photonics at Fraunhofer IWS, he has spent more than two decades advancing DLIP from a laboratory concept into an industrially deployable technology. His contributions are recognised with election to the Saxon Academy of Sciences and the Domingo Faustino Sarmiento Prize of the Argentine Senate for outstanding achievements in engineering. He serves as observer and technical adviser to SurFunction - the direct bridge between the science he helped create and the platform that scales it.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andrés Lasagni

Partnership

SurFunction was founded within the Steinbeis network - one of the world's most successful knowledge and technology transfer organisations, with more than 1,100 transfer companies operating globally.

One of these companies is the Material Engineering Center Saarland (MECS), founded over a decade ago by Prof. Dr. Frank Mücklich and based in Saarbrücken. MECS provided the institutional foundation that made it possible to advance DLIP technology through applied industrial projects with direct commercial relevance - bridging fundamental research and real-world application long before SurFunction existed.

Today, SurFunction and MECS maintain a close, trust-based cooperation - jointly developing new application fields in functional materials and surface engineering. It is a partnership built on shared origin, shared expertise and a shared conviction: that the most durable industrial innovations are those rooted in deep science.
